Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnerships 2026–2027

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 – Matric or Senior Certificate
- Pure Mathematics with at least 50%
- Life Science and/or Physical Science
- An overall average of at least 50%
- The required proficiency test approving the applicant to apply for registration with the Pharmacy Council as a learner basic assistant.
- Be a South African citizen.
- Successfully meet the required MIE, criminal and credit checks.
Dispensary Support Duties
A pharmacist’s assistant registered in the category pharmacist’s assistant learner basic may perform certain duties under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist in a pharmacy.
Learners may assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances, as permitted under the applicable requirements. They may also assist with the compounding, manipulation or preparation of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures.
Other responsibilities include unpacking and merchandising stock, maintaining cleanliness in the dispensary and OTC shelves, and performing additional duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager.
Learners will also develop the ability to accurately interpret prescriptions and work professionally and responsibly while complying with applicable legal and professional requirements.
Another important responsibility is ensuring accurate picking, packing, labelling and checking of medication. Learners must understand common dosages and important drug interactions while ensuring that medication is checked for accuracy and signed off by a pharmacist.
Stock Control and Patient Service
Dis-Chem learners may assist with controlling dispensary stock, including maintaining clean and organised shelves and monitoring medicine expiry dates. They may work with Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or scheduled substances under appropriate supervision.
Learners may also follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointments when requested by the Dispensary Manager. Additional duties can include assisting with call-centre scripts and patient-service telephone calls.
The role also involves providing appropriate information to individuals to promote health and assisting with scheme authorisation processes relating to chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medication.
Learners may report low or out-of-stock items and stock errors to the Dispensary Manager and receive dispensary stock according to the company’s approved Standard Operating Procedures.
Skills and Competencies
Successful applicants should be able to read, write and speak English and a second language. Good communication and listening skills are important because the role involves working with patients, customers, pharmacists and other members of the pharmacy team.
Candidates should have good time-management skills, be deadline-driven and able to work under pressure. Attention to detail, customer service, problem-solving, teamwork, conflict management and accountability are also important.
Applicants should demonstrate professional conduct and be trustworthy and honest. Computer and numerical skills are also required.
Experience in retail FMCG or Dis-Chem front-shop operations may be advantageous. Knowledge of drug and family planning products, complementary medicine, Unisolv, SAP and E-Scripting may also be beneficial.
